Gatekeeping

Don't be a dick. Gatekeeping needs to be killed in our society.

It's not your job to be a dick.

Establishing superiority is for those who feel inferior.

Gatekeeping is a method used to make others question themselves so they no longer pursue a direction in their life. Typically this is done by telling the new person they have no right, no purpose, no skill, no style, no favor, no whatever. Sometimes it's true. We all suck at things, but it doesn't mean without time and dedication that we can't get there. I just got done listening to my kid's band play a couple old rock songs. It sounded like a cat having an abortion in a back alley with Krusty the clown and a rusty coat hanger. Does that mean they shouldn't pursue this? No. Not at all. I'll keep driving them to practice and go to their shows. They will get better overtime but they won't get better if I gate keep music performance.

If you think someone is going to fail or shouldn't pursue something, they probably just suck at it right now. What are you doing to help them get better?

The ONLY caveat I'm going to give is when safety is an immediate concern. Am I going to stop someone from working with high voltage wiring who is not trained? Yes. Then I'm going to get a professional to help explain the dangers of high voltage wiring and explain how to become a master electrician. Then no one will have to die and they might have a new career path open to them.

Don't. Be. A. Dick.
